In this review of Coin IRA, I’ve followed BIC’s detailed criteria for evaluating the crypto IRA company.

About Coin IRA

Coin IRA homepage

Coin IRA was founded in 2017 and is one of the oldest cryptocurrency IRA platforms.

You can invest in over 15 cryptocurrencies with affordable transaction fees and no service fees.

The crypto retirement platform, headquartered in Woodland Hills, California, is open to investors in all 50 U.S. states.

Your cryptocurrency-backed IRA is available as a traditional IRA, Roth IRA, or SEP IRA with a $5,000 investment minimum.

It’s also one of the more user-friendly platforms with 24-hour account chat support, which can be useful when trading crypto during the 22/7 trading window.

In comparison, most only offer phone and email support during standard business hours.

Cryptocurrencies Supported

You can invest in approximately 20 cryptocurrencies:

  • Aave (AAVE)
  • Basic Attention (BAT)
  • Bitcoin (BTC)
  • Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
  • Chainlink (LINK)
  • Compound (COMP)
  • Dai (DAI)
  • Ethereum (ETH)
  • Litecoin (LTC)
  • Livepeer (LPT)
  • Maker (MKR)
  • Mana (MANA)
  • Solana (SOL)
  • Stellar (XLM)
  • The Graph (GRT)
  • Unisawp (UNI)
  • USDC (USDC)
  • Yearn Finance (YFI)
  • XRP (XRP)

While many of the best crypto IRA companies tend to offer between 40 and 80 cryptocurrencies, I find this wide assortment sufficient for most traders.

You can also easily just build a long-term portfolio with Bitcoin and Ethereum to avoid constant portfolio management.

Pricing & Fees

The minimum initial investment is $5,000 and there is no minimum for subsequent trades. There are no setup, annual service, or storage fees.

You only pay fees when buying or selling assets:

  • 1.25% when buying
  • 1% when selling

Additionally, precious metals transactions require a $10 minimum investment.

These fees and minimums are very affordable, in my opinion.

However, some crypto IRA platforms have slightly lower initial deposit requirements and trading fees.

Storage & Security

All Coin IRA accounts have free cold storage, along with 24/7 military-grade protection and insurance against crime and theft.

Further, I like that Equity Trust Company (ETC) is the IRA custodian. ETC is one of the oldest and largest self-directed IRA custodians.

It maintains your tax-compliant paperwork and offers FDIC insurance on your cash deposits.

Additionally, Ledger Enterprises provides cold, offline storage to protect your crypto keys using the same technology as governments and international banks.

It provides similar storage services for many other crypto retirement portfolios.

Withdrawing funds involves a multi-signature wallet requiring permission from yourself, Ledger, and ETC.

Account Setup & Maintenance

You can open your tax-advantaged account by following a few simple steps:

  1. Verify eligibility: First, provide your email address and basic account details online. The platform makes sure you’re at least 18 years old and live in the United States.
  2. Choose account type: You can open a combination of traditional IRA, Roth IRA, and SEP IRA accounts. Non-retirement trading accounts are available too.
  3. Fund your account: IRA transfers and 401(k) rollovers are the easiest ways to satisfy the investment minimum for retirement accounts. Cash contributions are also available up to your annual contribution limit.
  4. Start trading: Existing retirement account transfers usually take a couple of weeks to settle. You can place your first trades during the 22/7 trading window.

Account support by live chat is available 24/7 if you have setup or ongoing questions.

Unfortunately, no mobile app is available, but the web trading platform is phone and tablet-friendly.

Overall, I’m impressed by its usability.

Resources & Tools

Coin IRA’s educational and research tools are comparable to those of several competitors and taxable crypto exchanges.

Beginners will appreciate the cryptocurrency terminology page, which briefly defines the most common crypto trading concepts.

The company regularly publishes blog articles discussing the latest trends and news.

Moreover, you can contact customer support to request the free electronic guide “How to Add Bitcoin and Other Cryptocurrencies to Your IRA.”

Other platforms can be a better fit if you want more hands-on tools, such as periodic webinars and trading simulators.

However, these educational resources are sufficient if you simply want an easy-to-trade platform and perform your research on third-party sites.

Reputation & Reviews

Dozens of current customers leave positive Coin IRA reviews, primarily praising the above-average customer service quality.

Most testimonials mention hands-on help during the onboarding process.

As a result, completing the application paperwork is a breeze and the agents take time to answer your questions so you can be a confident investor without high-pressure sales tactics.

Positive feedback also includes its low trading fees and zero account service fees.

There are no glaring criticisms to mention at the time of this review. Still, I wish there were more reviews on the various consumer rating platforms to provide a more precise assessment.

Notably, Coin IRA has an A+ Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating. The business has been BBB-accredited since 2017.

Customer Service & Support

Phone support is available on weekdays from 7 am to 7 pm Pacific and by appointment on weekends.

A unique feature is that live chat account support is accessible 24/7.

You can also send an email outside of normal business hours.
